Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a cell surface receptor. It is activated by its specific ligands including EGF and TGF-alpha. Some gene mutations lead to EGFR overexperession or overacivity in various cancer cells, making EGFR an effective cancer treatment target. Inhibiting EGFR with small molecules or monoclonal antibodies is effective in treating cancer.
