PD-L1 (CD274, B7-H1) is frequenctly upregulated on tumor cells. Binding of PD-L1 to PD-1 on T cells delivers an inhibitor signal to T cells and suppresses T cell activation, thus promotes cancer growth. Many biotech companies are developing PD-L1 blocking drugs to treat cancer. Anti-PD-L1 monoclonal antibodies dvelopmed by MedImmune, Genentech, Merck and Pfizer are in clinical trials.
