Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a type of protein that promotes angiogenesis and vasculogenesis. The protein is required by solid tumors to form blood vessels within the tumor to provide supplies. Blocking VEGF signaling can cut off nutrients supply to tumors and starve tumors to death. Some VEGF-blocking drugs, such as Bevacizumab (Avastin), have been approved by FDA for treatment of cancers. Due to alternative splicing of VEGF mRNA, there are multiple isoforms of VEGF.
